Install Software Updates Task skipped during Deploy Task Sequence
When our OSD Deployment Task Sequence executes, the Install Software Updates actions no matter what i select is essentially skipped, with nothing done. Here's the details of the Environment. We have a site server call PCHUB which is a SUP, MP, and SLP among other things. We have a primary site directly underneath PCHUB called OSD, which is a DP & MP, but not a SUP. The plan is to use this site for our builds. Everything works great thus far except Install Software Updates. We are using SCCM R2 SP2 w/ MDT 2010 We have a software update deployment already mandatory with a few Win7 patches that is pointing to the same collection that the OSD Task sequence is. In my Setup Config Mgr action, i do list SMSSLP=PCHUB after reading a few posts. But still doesn't find anything. Also, the PC is joined to our domain at this stage in the build. The build essentially uses the microsoft deployment toolkit template task sequence. This is not a capture. So, my question is do i have to install a SUP on the server that i am doing my OSD builds on, or shoudl the above configuration work for me? The SMSTS*.log has very little information to go on. Any help would be very much appreciated.

do you have a Deployment Management Task pointing to a collection which the computer is a member of DURING deployment ? are software updates working outside of the OSD process ? My step by step SCCM Guides windows-noob on Twitter

Niall, Thanks for the quick reply. To answer your question, I am not sure. I will look at the other post. The computer i am deploying the TS to was added into SCCM via Import Computer association using Mac Address. it is added to the collection "OSD - Win7Entx86 Deploy". on that same collection, i have a software updates deployment management task pointing to that exact same collection.. Are you saying that the computer association object that I imported becomes obsolete and a new resource ID is created in SCCM during the build process? If that's the case, then I would say "No", i dont' have another collection. If that machine ultimately becomes the computer associated object, there is a deployment management task pointing to it.

I did a few things: I added the forcerefresh.vbs script based on the article you linked. It still blows right though it. BUt I at least have more information in the SMSTS log on what actually is failing. Here's a snippet of that section and i bolded the specific error. <![LOG[NextInstructionPointer: 123]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="1" thread="2420" file="executionenv.cxx:482"> <![LOG[Set a global environment variable _SMSTSInstructionTableSize=139]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="0" thread="2420" file="executionenv.cxx:668"> <![LOG[Set a global environment variable SMSTSRebootRequested=]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="0" thread="2420" file="executionenv.cxx:668"> <![LOG[Set a global environment variable SMSTSRebootDelay=]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="0" thread="2420" file="executionenv.cxx:668"> <![LOG[Set a global environment variable SMSTSRebootMessage=]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="0" thread="2420" file="executionenv.cxx:668"> <![LOG[Set a global environment variable SMSTSRebootReason=]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="0" thread="2420" file="executionenv.cxx:668"> <![LOG[Set a global environment variable SMSTSRetryRequested=]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="0" thread="2420" file="executionenv.cxx:668"> <![LOG[Succeeded loading resource DLL 'C:\Windows\system32\CCM\1033\TSRES.DLL']LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="1" thread="2420" file="util.cpp:869"> <![LOG[The task execution engine started execution]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="1" thread="2420" file="engine.cxx:70"> <![LOG[Sending status message . . .]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="1" thread="2420" file="utility.cxx:292"> <![LOG[Send a task execution status message SMS_TSExecution_TaskSequenceStartInfo]LOG]!><time="12:51:16.465+240" date="05-19-2010" component="TSManager" context="" type="1" thread="2420" file="utility.cxx:314"> <![LOG[MP server US5074SMSP.america.apci.com and port 80. Hi, I am having the same error as you...did you ever got it resolved? Appreciate any help! see below for details. All was working before we upgraded to SCCM SP2 and WSUS to 3.0 SP2 so i am not sure which one to blame... Patches are working outside our OSD process, and we dont see this failure all the time during the imaging process, just sometimes. I am deploying XP SP3 and the Install Software Updates is pretty much the last step (I have one more step that adds a security group to the local admin group of the PC). Again this is happening randomly but consistantly enough on several SCCM servers that we use for OSD. Thanks...

I had this error "Updates paused cookie is null." as well, and I managed to solved it by checkin wherever unknown computer account or re-installed computer account in SCCM is really pointed to Software Update collections as well. My problem was, that I didn't enabled SU - collection to subcollections where my unknown computer account was.
