Install Software Updates
I have package with some Windows Updates in it. The package is set to install for the "All Unknown Computers" collection. The problem I am having is when the TS gets to "Install Software Updates" it fails with error code 0x80004005. This just suddenly happened a month or so ago but was working up until then. I also am curious if when i create the software updates using Microsoft Updates will it install only the OS appropriate updates? Meaning if I have Windows 7 and Windows XP updates in the package will it know which to install? I currently do not have it setup that way. There are only Windows XP updates in the group. Thanks

Hi, You are correct the client will only install updates which are applicable for the OS version and the same for office version, e.tc. So you can mix windows xp and windows 7 updates for instance in the same deployment, package e.t.c Regards, jörgen-- My System center blog ccmexec.com --

as Jorgen says the client will know which updates to isntall, so mixing updates if fine as long as you don't go above 500 patches per package (not recommended), if the updates are now failing to install have you checked the clients boundaries or indeed the following hotfix My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

Also note that you do not install update packages. Packages merely contain updates. Update Deployments assign updates to systems and have no connection to the update packages. Clients may pull an update from any available package. To properly troubleshoot this issue, like all OSD issues, you need to start with the smsts.log on the client. Is this happening on all deployments and task sequences?Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

Thanks for the replies. I dont see anywhere in the SMSTS.LOG file that is really pointing in any direction. There are a couple lines that mentions Software Updates and Windows Updates but I dont see any errors following either. Is there another log is should be looking at? My client boundries I image should be fine since the OS loads are working as well as mandatory package installs? Jason - it is happening on all my OS TS. We also have WSUS running. The problem is in the past year we have started catching up on Windows Updates. Now I am 80+ updates behind on the Windows XP image. Realistically would this be easier to dump the load onto a vm, install updates and repack it for SCCM deployment to get it caught up? If anyone has a better suggestion please let me know. Is it efficient to have a lot of Windows Updates install during OSD?

So I have been thinking. I think the more effective way of doing this would be to run the current install TS and then do updates when it is done, then (this is where i dont know what to do), capture that install. This is how I think it is done, I am "pretty" new to SCCM still, only been working in it for 5-6 months, i get the basics and can capture and deploy windows 7 x86/x64. This is what I am thinking though : 1. Run normal task sequence with all drivers and apps disabled so I get just the OS. 2. Log into the system and do Windows Updates via WSUS. 3. Use a TS to capture my updated Image. I am not sure how to go about doing this, the first 2 things I can do, the 3rd I am not sure of. Which also brings to question, when I load the image it will be Joined to a Domain, so it will get GPO - is this good or bad? I dont want the image going to Windows Updates to get the updates or it will get a lot more than what is currently approved. I have tried searching but either this hasent been answered (which im sure it has) or I am horrible at searching.

"I am not sure how to go about doing this, the first 2 things I can do, the 3rd I am not sure of. Which also brings to question, when I load the image it will be Joined to a Domain, so it will get GPO - is this good or bad?" it's bad, you should not let your image join the domain, keep it workgroup joined, use the standard build and capture process to create your master core image, to do a build and capture using the server locator point (which is needed when you are workgroup joined) see this post i describe how I'd do Build and Capture task sequences versus Deploy task sequences in this PowerPoint (with notes) here. for your Point 3. above, to capture your finished image you can use Capture Media (right click on task sequences, choose Create Task Sequence Media and follow the wizard My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

So for the information : SMSSLP=(servername) SMSMP=(servername) FSP=(servername) Are all the server name going to be my SCCM server even though WSUS is handling Windows Updates? Or do I need to create update packages in SCCM (this is currently not working). If SCCM is acting as a pointer to WSUS where do I set that?
