Information Management Policy - retroactive?

Are IM policies retroactive? meaning, if I use a policy that effectively says "dateModified + 180 days = send to recycle bin", will it apply to 1) all documents - even ones that are past 180 days (e.g., 250 days), 2) apply only to current and future documents that roll into their 180th day, or 3) only apply to future documents added?

Like I said, I haven't been able to find a clear, definitive answer, just speculation or assumption. My organization is in a crunch and I need to be sure of this question/answer before I implement. Many t

I was about 98% certain, but did a test anyway :-).

I set a policy on a library and then ran the "Expiration Policy" timer job. All documents in that library from before the expiration time were immediately deleted and moved to the Site Collection Recycle Bin. In my setup this job runs every Saturday at 11 PM by default.

So yes, the new policy will apply to all existing documents. (I.e. your #1 option)

oh... batteries not included, your mileage may vary, this involves deletion of data, do your own tests!
