Importing From Spreadsheet Question
I am trying to import a spread sheet with around 700 items. There are 5 columns as follow: Packaging Description|Size|Origin|Product Code|Comments. When I upload the entire list I would like for the Packaging Description to become the Title Column so that the name becomes a link to the Display View. It works when I just brings in a few items, but not the whole list. Is there some rules that need to be followed that I should look for in my excel such as missing data or special characters that are not letting me turn that column into the title field. Thanks Brandon

I fought with this last week, too. The problem appears to be that if SharePoint believes that the incoming text of a column needs to be a multirow text column, instead of single row, then it will pass on it and go find a better single row candidate. This is only my educated opinion. My end result was to make the list in SharePoint, the way that I wanted it to be, then let Access do the heavy lifting. 1. In SharePoint, manually create a custom list. a. Don't set any fields to required yet, just make the fields with the data types. b. Avoid populating choices if you can, unless you know they'll get filled correctly.) 2. In Microsoft Access... (The Swiss Army Knife for SharePoint.) a. Link the New List Link (or Import the Spreadsheet) b. Create an append query to pull from Spreadsheet, and push into the list. There's no magic bullet here, it's just trial and error. Sometime you can get it done with only an append query, but you may need to do an initial append, then follow it up with an Update query or three. I've paid for many a motorcycle solving problems like this. So, once you master it, sell it. :D Steve Clark, MCTS | Twin-Soft.com Easy Bins Dumpster Rentals of Northern VA.
