Impact on MIIS2003 if AD Schema is upgraded to Windows 2008 R2 domain controller level version 48
We are planning to upgrade our current Infrastructure to the most updated level. Currently we have our Forest Schema in Windows 2003 AD Domain Controller level, Our Exchange Servers are at version 2007, our Identity Management Server is running MIIS 2003 SP2. In our phase 1 planning we are preparing to upgrade the forest schema to Windows 2008 R2 AD Domain Controller level and Exchange 2010 so as to add Windows 2008 R2 domain controllers and Exchange 2010 servers. Once we upgrade the schema level in our forest will it affect MIIS 2003 functionality in any way? We will not be migrating to FIM2010 as of now but will be done later in phase 2 planning.

He Jimmy, The support directories for MIIS 2003 are listed here (2008 is not officially supported) : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc720587(WS.10).aspx I think it is easier to migrate to ILM 2007 FP1 than to FIM 2010, to get a supported scenario Need realtime FIM synchronization? check out http://www.traxionsolutions.com/imsequencer

Hi Paul, You mean to say that it is a risk to upgrade my forest schema level from version 31 (ability to have Windows 2003 R2 domain controllers ) to version 48 (ability to have Windows 2008 R2 domain controllers) right now? It will break my existing MIIS2003 configuration and it won't work unless I migrate to FIM2010? But our plan to touch the upgrade/migration of Identity Management is in phase 2 and first we want to upgrade our domain controllers and Exchange in phase 1. So we have to re-write our planning and first do upgrade of MIIS2003 to FIM2010 and then do upgrade of domain controllers OS and exchange version? Awaiting a response on this one. Jimmy George

I don't know if it will not work at all, but I cannot find anywhere that AD2008 is supported within MIIS 2003 SP2. Maybe if you leave your forest level to support older versions it will still work, but as said you have probably an unsupported scenario Need realtime FIM synchronization? check out http://www.traxionsolutions.com/imsequencer

I'd tend to expect things will continue to work fine with just updating the schema and continuing to operate in the 2003 FFL but I've got no hard evidence. My Book - Active Directory, 4th Edition My Blog - www.briandesmond.com
