If SCCM & WDS are on different hosts, how to OSD?
Hello all, I am just getting started with SCCM 2007, so please bear my stupidity. I installed SCCM on server 2008 (x86) in mixed mode & WDS on server 2003(x86) in mixed mode i.e along with legacy RIS. Now my question is how does SCCM know to hand-off the PXE requests that contact the WDS on a different server? From documentation, I am required to configure WDS to not to respond to any clients and set the delay 1second whereas on SCCM the has PXE respond to all known/unknown clients and delay 0seconds. If sccm were to respond to PXE request then what is wds doing? If it does, when does it kick in? When I PXE boot clients, they all get the RIS prompt than windows PXE image boot or atleast I should get an option screen like I get when I have an PXE Boot image on WDS. FYI: I followed the video guide by Richard Smith from here http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2008/03/20/sccm-2007-and-microsoft-deployment-toolkit-video-walkthrough.aspx

You need to install the PXE Service Point site system role on the WDS system: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680668.aspx. Note that this will take over your WDS Server and you won't be able to use it for other PXE tasks.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

Ok. So I disabled the WDS on the other server and installed PXE service point with necessary config. Does it take time to propagate to system(switching to new PXE server from old)? I did not have any (066) PXE boot host name in DHCP scope options? Still the client cannot find a PXE boot server. I distributed the PXE boot images to both dist. points, still no go.

I don't understand what you did? Where did you install the PXE Service Point? Whichever system you installed it on must also have WDS running. The PXE Service Point merely takes control over an existing installation of WDS. The installation of WDS can be local to your primary site server or remote. You simply create the Pxe Service Point on the system that has WDS installed already. Also, to PXE boot a system across subnets requires special configuration, either an IP helper configured on your layer 3 device(s) or the DHCP 66 & 67 options (IP Helpers are generally prefered).Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

Thanks Jason. I was able to understand and troubleshoot from this post. I hope it is useful for others coming this way. http://blogs.technet.com/b/smsandmom/archive/2008/09/17/configmgr-2007-troubleshooting-pxe-service-point-issues-and-wds-service-not-starting.aspx
