I need one item in a document library to always show at the top of the list
Is there anyway to pin an item to the top of a document library by content type or by the item itself? The version is SharePoint 2007.

Add a new field. Then if you always only have one document you want pinned, you can use a Yes/No field. (Pin=Yes for this one) and sort on that field first in the View. (Default value of the field = No) If you maybe want to pin on several documents in order, use a number field and give as default 999 so that you can use 1,2,3 etc. for the pinned ones. Sort on that field first in the View. Thank you for the response, little unclear on the process. I'm guessing when you say fields, you are referring to columns? So I added a column with a yes/no field but don't see where to sort on that column "yes". Or maybe I've missed what you call fields entirely? How do I get from point A to point B in that case? I need to sort by content type, this is a requirement. I just want this one document to be pinned to the top of the list.

In my book I refer to columns/fields sometimes. They are the same thing. You don't need to use a content type you can add a simple field/column of the type(s) I suggested. When you create a view you specify the fields that are included in the view; how the view is sorted and possibly a filter. If you sort by a Yes / No field, depending on whether the sort is ascending or descending the column/fields with the Yes values will come first. (descending I'd guess!)If you don't like to use a Yes/No field use a Number (or even single line text field) instead and sort on that. If I've remembered wrongly and you can't sort on Yes / No fields apologies but you can certainly sort on both Number and Single-line text fields/columns. Thanks for the clarification. I did a kludgy workaround as I require grouping by content type, and therefore I couldn't make the sort work like you suggested. I named the content type for the item I needed pinned so that it showed up first in the list. Thanks again, that is good information that I'll remember for the future.
