ILM 2 was scheduled for release first quarter 09. Now that it has been renamed to Identity Manager 2010 and it has been released yet is there going to be more slippage in the RTM time frame. The new dates were announced awhile ago. There will be another release candidate in Q3 of this year and the new RTM update is scheduled for Q1 2010.Paul Adare CTO IdentIT Inc. ILM MVP

I'v been all over the ILM site and didn't see any mention of new dates. Of course that doesn't mean it's not there. :)Is there any modification to Acitve Directory when installing ILM?

About the modification to Active Directory, could you be more specific?- Thinking of ILM 2007or ILM "2"/FIM2010?- Which functionality are you thinking of?- Do you have specific scenarios in mind? You need to set the proper ports, rights & permissions in AD if you need to connect ILM to AD.In a very particular case, to support password synchronization you need to extend the AD schema. But in other cases/scenarios the impact to AD is minimal, concerning system modifications, at least.HTH,PeterPeter Geelen - Sr. Consultant IDA (http://www.traxion.com)

Thank you Peter your info is very helpful. The reason I was asking about AD modifications is because I want to try the ILM 2beta and I'd like to try it in a real world secnario with the users that will actually have to use it.I will install and manage it but I will have to also show the HR department that it's not going to be too much for them to use. Also the Self-Service Password Management will sell the whole thing all by itself, but I have to show it in action. So I wanted to test it against our production environment if itisn't going to be too intrusive. The password syncronization will extend the AD schema, and if that's all then I can deal with that. I know you never test betas in production but I'm competing for shrinking budget numbers that are being defined now over the next few months for next years budget. I will take the chance if I can determine that I want be beating up the AD production site too bad. What's your opinion on the matter? I'm I taking too big a risk?

Honestly right now you don't get any support from Microsoft on this...They will not support any of the beta bits... So if you run into a problem you are on your own..Now as far as putting it in... You could sync the users from prod into the portal.. and workout your requirements.. But you will be doing it at your own risk. There are many companies that could help you with demo's and to show you how it can work..I would personally wait until the newest RC is released.I wanted to clear up a couple things... You can join the TAP or RDP plans and Microsoft will support you.. You just have to be part of one these programs..HTH,joe Joe Stepongzi - Identity Management Consultant - ILM MVP - www.microsoftIdM.com,ilmXframework.codeplex.com

Thanks Joe for your response. I agree that the RC would be better to wait for. I didn't expect any support and fully intend to give the product a good going over myself anyway. I was just wondering how much change in the AD would be created. Of course I'm not worried about the ILM 2 failing or needing some tweeks. That much I expect. I was just trying tofind outhow much would be change in the AD before I go ahead and do something like this.

I a little confused by your question "how much woulbd be change in the AD"..What do you mean by this? Are you asking if there are schema extensions needed?? Which they are not needed...So you know you can filter out by objects and containers in the AD management agent.. Meaning you could bring user objects in certain OU'sYou can be pretty granular...Maybe you can explain a bit more??? So that we are clear?JoeJoe Stepongzi - Identity Management Consultant - ILM MVP - www.microsoftIdM.com,ilmXframework.codeplex.com

What I mean is how much in AD is modified, updated, added to or whatever, by the installation of ILM 2?

You don't have to install anything in or on Active Directory to implement ILM "2".You basically configure an agentless managment agent to connect to ad and configure rules between AD and the metaverse inside the sync engine.HTH,JoeJoe Stepongzi - Identity Management Consultant - ILM MVP - www.microsoftIdM.com,ilmXframework.codeplex.com

OK, since I'm getting an education here, does that hold true for ILM as well?

Yes it does... The time you would add any change to Active Directory would be if you installed PCNS on all domain controllers for Password Sync to other systems. To install PCNS on a domain controller, you need to extend the schema with the new extensions.HTH,Joe Joe Stepongzi - Identity Management Consultant - ILM MVP - www.microsoftIdM.com,ilmXframework.codeplex.com
