IE crashes when sitting on list datasheet view - STSLIST.DLL error
Hello, I have an issue with Sharepoint crashing while someone is in datasheet view of a list. The error occurs randomly and is not associated with opening the list, editing an item or any particular view of the list. The user can have the list sitting in the background and the error will just pop-up occassionally and crash internet explorer. Sometimes it can go weeks without issues and then the errors start again. I verified that nothing out of the ordinary is running on the server that may be causing issues. Right now the list has about 800 items, maybe 20 columns and it runs a couple formulas and does a lookup to another smaller spreadsheet also hosted on the Sharepoint site. I'm just using the built-in functionality, no additional coding on the site at all. There are six to eight users updating different items simulataneously at various points in the day. We are running XP SP3, Office 2007 Pro SP2, IE6 SP3 and Sharepoint 2.0/2003 (housed on a corporate server). This has happened to a number of users, two who had upgrades from 2003 and one who had a clean install of 2007. A couple people have single-core processors with 1GB RAM that are a little older and one has a dual-core with 2GB RAM, all Dell. The error says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close." "The following add-on was running when this problem occurred: File STSLIST.DLL". If you click the advanced button on the error, it brings up the add-on screen and singles out "Microsoft Office List 12.0" as the problem. It seems like a little slowness in one of the all-items views (which are very rarely used) also occurs around the same time period. I've exhausted the resources at my company, so hopefully someone here will be able to help me... Thanks, Harry

Hi Harry, do you have error in event viewer of the sharepoint server? The message "Microsoft Office List 12.0" it's for sharepoint 2007 (or WSS 3.0), not for your 2003/2.0 Please check the version of add-on in your Office clients computer. Bye. Raffa!

Hi Raffa, I don't think there was an error in event viewer - I had someone in Sharepoint support look at the issue on the same day that I had a number of crashes and he didn't see anything. Internet Explorer on the local machine is crashing, not the site itself, so maybe that's why no error shows up in event viewer? I was told we are on Sharepoint Server 2003 - when I pull up Help off of the main portal, it brings up the help dialogue for Sharepoint Portal Server 2003. Looking at the add-ons in Internet Explorer, the STSLIST.DLL add-on that loads when in datasheet view shows Microsoft Office List 12.0. Do you know if the 11 vs 12 refer to the version of Sharepoint or the version of Office? Thanks, Harry

Hi Harry, just a little think, do you have update all the .net framework component in the Sharepoint Server with Microsoft Update or WSUS? Check this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2007/06/21/excel-2007-add-in-for-synchronizing-tables-with-sharepoint-lists-now-available.aspx Check the security zone for the intranet site. It must be in LOCAL INTRANET. Bye Raffa!

This looks to be an issue on the local machine with some script in IE. Try the following KB and check if this is of any help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833714
