IE6 and SharePoint 2010 compatibility
By taking help of the below mentioned extract from a Microsoft article the client is asking us to see if the Travelweb insurance website that we are currently developing using
SharePoint 2010 can be ensured to be viewable using Internet Explorer 6.
Browser compatibility for publishing sites
For publishing sites, the Web Content Management features built into SharePoint Server 2010 provide a deep level of control over the markup and styling of the reader experience. Page designers can use these features to help ensure that the pages they design
are compatible with additional browsers, including Internet Explorer 6, for viewing content. However, it is the page designers’ responsibility to create pages that are compatible with the browsers that they want to support.
We are seeing different results for the IE6, operating system and service pack combinations -
E.g. The site works on Internet Explorer 6 (version 6.0.2900.5512) on Widows XP Professional version 2002 with Service Pack 3 with some minor issues. However the same site does
not show any results on a Windows Server 2003 IE6 (6.0.3790.1830) Service Pack 1 environment.
We seek your input as a page designer what additional care must be taken to
ensure that the pages designed are compatible with Internet explorer 6 all versions. E.g. choice of controls, use of JavaScript
functions or constructs etc. Also, What would be the disadvantages or tradeoffs the customer should be aware of that would enable them to take informed decision.
