Huge site collection needs to be split
Hi All, We have a MOSS 2007 64 bit environment and the database server is SQL Server 2005 64 bit. This MOSS environment has a web application with a single site collection and about 450GB of content. There are about 2500 total sites in this site collection. We are planning on breaking up this site collection into multiple site collections for manageability and to resolve some other issues. The top level site has 12 subsite hierarchies and we are planning to break the site collection into 12 site collections based on these hierarchies. Three of the subsite hierarchies have more than 80GB of content. Also, some individual sites alone have more than 15GB of data. Initially we thought of using stsadm export/import to achieve this but realized that stsadm export has a limit of 2GB. Are there any recommendations on how to realize this solution? We can write a .Net script if required but are worried if it would run into memory issues because of the size of site/subsite hierarchies involved. Please let me know if you need any additional details to make a recommendation. Thanks, Sanjeev

Why not try doing a backup and restore on the site collection through STSADM? Something like what is outlined at the top of this link: http://mindsharpblogs.com/Ben/archive/2006/09/19/1292.aspx John SharePoint911: SharePoint Consulting http://www.rossonmoss.com

Hi All, I am not trying to move a site collection here. Ihaveto movea subsite (with all the sites under it) within an existing site collectionto anew site collection. Thanks, Sanjeev

The best option for you may be to backup the entire site collection and use it to restore to 12 new site collections, then delete the content you don't want from each of the 12. Something else you can look into are some custom STSADM extensions written by Gary Lapointe (http://stsadm.blogspot.com/). He has one for exportsite that I don't think has any size restrictions. I've used it before with good success.

Hi,We decided to go with a third party tool to split the site collection. We evaluated several products and finally settled on Metalogix Migrator to do the split. Thanks,Sanjeev

Hi Sanjeev Were you successful in migrating the content using the tool? We have around 300 GB site collection (4000 +groups, 2500 +sites) and bought the same tool but it failed and we finally gave up on that. Regards Srini
