How to write consolidated comments to a column properly formatted

I want to write the consolidated workflow comments to an existing column.  I've been able to write them, however they are not formatted properly.  The hard carriage returns </b> are treated as strings (see image blow).  Is there a way to write the consolidated comments to a column which is properly formatted?  Note that I tried adding the comments from the workflow, but it doesn't give me the outcome (approve/reject), just the user comments.

Is the comments column a Rich Text of Plain Text type?

The comments column is a multi line column in a document library, so there's no choice as to the type.  I'm assuming it's a plain text type.

Hi R3BSolutions,

Is the consolidated comments column an OOB column created in task process in Start Approval Process workflow action?

If so, then we are unable to copy it to another column and keeping its format. A workaround is to copy the string including HTML to a mul-line column. Later modify with the format through event receiver.

If the consolidated comment is a custom column with multi line type, select it return as Plain text type,  when we copy to another column from SharePoint Designer workflow.

Thanks & Regards,
Emir

The consolidated comments column is a column I created not an OOTB column.  It's a custom column with multi line type.  Because it's in a document library, SharePoint does not give you the option to set it as plain text, rich text or enhanced rich text.  I believe it's set as plain text with no other options.

Hi Michael,

If it is a custom column with mul-line type (no matter it is a plain text, rich text), when we lookup it from SharePoint Designer workflow, it allows us to select return type. Please select return type as "Plain text", then all those HTML tags will be removed.

Thanks & Regards,

When I either store the consolidated comments to a variable or write it to a column in the document library, the only option I have is plaint text
