Would having your users install a free MS Project viewer be viable? There are a few out there...I did this on one of my sites and placed a gratuitous "download viewer here" link on the page where they could download the viewer.

You can use an Add In we produce that shares the MS Project tasks to a SharePoint Task List (or Project Tasks List). Thismeans your team can view the tasks(and assignments) right in SharePoint without MS Project installed on everyone's computer. I do sugest you take a look at the Housatonic's Microsoft Project Viewer Server 2010 at www.projectviewercentral.com. It does have a free web part for sharepoint integration to view mpp files from a document library.
