How to use external SMTP server for MOSS 2007 ?
Can any one help me to setup external SMTP server in MOSS 2007 for outgoing emails? The short story is, recently my in house exchange server is migrated to MS Exchange Online. Before migration I was using my local exchange server for SMTP settings in MOSS. But the server is no more now. I am not able to receive any mail alerts for MOSS sites. Kindly help me to setting up MOSS server to use external SMTP server. I tried http://blogs.technet.com/msonline/archive/2009/09/02/using-smtp-relay-with-exchange-online.aspx . But no luck Thanks in advance, Sandeep Lad

First check with your network team that the port required for SMTP is opened on your firewall if not your SharePoint server will be unable to communicate to the external SMTP server. This link provides information about setting up SMTP with gmail. The same steps could be used for MS Exchange Online: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/sharepointgeneral/thread/c6524540-9639-4f0f-9276-ea34d3fbef1d

Thanks Neville for your reply. TCP 587 specified by MS exchange online is opened. Even for testing i opened ANY ports. even I configured local SMTP server as per the link you given. But no luck error: The user or users have been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail. To verify that e-mail is configured correctly, contact your server administrator. Regards, Sandeep Lad
