How to size and design pchat deployment?

Hi Experts,

We've a customer who has the below environment:

Environment
============

1 Enterprise pool with 3 Front end servers.

2 SQL servers with SQl Cluster.

1 Edge pool with 2 edge servers.

2 Reverse proxy servers (IIS-ARR)

2 WAC roles.

File share - DFSR clusters

Total users : 16,000

Questions
==========
1. How to size and deploy persistent chat role for this environment (16,000)?
2. How to amend the table on this article (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg615006(v=ocs.14).aspx) based on this environment?

This article is not 100 % helpful to design and deploy persistent chat servers for this environment. Please assist.

Many thanks.

Hi

Officially Microsoft state the requirements you have already found. However, you can use this tool to design your requirements developed by Alessio https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/office/Lync-2013-Standard-Edition-324bf0f1

I would imagine for the size of your users 2 x pChat servers in a pool as each one can support upto 20,000 users. This will give you HA.

The existing backend SQL database engine can run the back end provided they have enough horsepower for the database 8-12GB should be sufficient memory for the DB.

thanks

Hi SBHV,

A single Persistent Chat Server Front End Server can support 20,000 active users. In order to achieve HA you can deploy Persistent Chat servers into a Pool with up to 2 or more active front ends similar to the FE servers. If one Persistent Chat server goes offline, clients will be reconnected to one of the other active Persistent Chat servers in that pool. Reconnection time is about 10 logons/second. This means with large deployments this could take quite a bit of time for failover to complete.

For Back End, to ensure optimum performance, its recommended to install the PersistentChatStore on a dedicated SQL Server Back End Server. Also for HA, you can configure SQL Mirroring/Cluster.

In addition, it is recommended that you install the Persistent Chat file store. This contains the data that is uploaded and gets downloaded to Persistent Chat rooms. Again you have two HA options: DFS or File Share clusters.

Best regards,

Eric
