How to recover from lost databases?
MOSS 2007 SP1 :Hi there,We are in the situation where our sharepoint databases are definetely lost. We have only one web site built on sharepoint 2007 (with web parts and an application database that is still up and running) and a server farm with 2 servers. Sharepoint is not used as a collaboration platform. I'm looking for the best possible scenario to recover from this situation. Should we start from scratch or could we recreate the databases from the existing infrastructure ?TIA.

What do you mean by "our SharePoint databases are definitely lost"? Are all of your SharePoint databases gone, or just specific ones? If your farm's configuration database is gone, then you're pretty much going to have to start from scratch. You may be able to run the SharePoint Config Wizard on your non-database servers to remove them from the farm, then create a new farm, but I suspect that if you don't have a config database you won't even be able to do that. You'll most likely need to uninstall SharePoint from those servers, then reinstall and create a new farm, allowing you to use the existing servers and the other apps installed on them. If your config database is still in place, the next main question is if you have a backup of your content database or not. If you have a running farm and a backup of that content database, you can restore the backup into your SQL environment and attach the restored content database back into the farm. In the Central Admin site's Application Management page, click the Content Databases link in the Web Application Management section. In the Manage Content Databases page, click the Add a Content Database button. In the Add Content Database page, enter the exact name and location of the database you restored, and click the OK button. All of the sites within that database should be added. Unfortunately, they are all gone.

I'm very, very sorry to hear that, that's got to be frustrating. So you're pretty much going to need to start over, SharePoint stores the vast majority of its configuration data and all of the content uploaded into it in its databases. The big question is whether or not you deployed any custom code to your farm, and if so where that code is located so that you can redeploy it to the new farm before you do anything drastic like reformat the servers. You may be able to join the SharePoint servers to a new farm, but there's a good chance that you'll need to uninstall and reinstall SharePoint to completely pull it off.
