How to monitor SharePoint Site Security and Quota?

Hi, does anyone know how to monitor add/remove/change to SharePoint Site administrator, groups membership, Site Owner and Quota?

I appreciate any help and information.

Hi Ziba,

According to your post, you wanted to know how to monitor the changes to SharePoint administrator, groups membership, site owner and quota.

You can try to use the Admin Report Kit for SharePoint 2010. It can ably assist in generating permissions reports for various SharePoint objects for documentation or monitoring SharePoint security or internal & external audit purposes. Admin Report Kit for SharePoint 2010 provides detailed permissions reports pertaining to various SharePoint entities like web application, site collection, site, list and list items.

For more information you can refer to the following article: http://www.vyapin.com/blogs/index.php/2010/12/28/sharepoint-2010-security-reports/

Whats more, you can use the audit to view the data in the audit logs, you can refer to the following articles about the audit:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/sharepoint-server-help/view-audit-log-reports-HA102039795.aspx

http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/sharepoint-server-help/configure-audit-settings-for-a-site-collection-HA102031737.aspx

You can check the storage quota as the following steps,

  1. In your site, click Site Actions, and then select Site Settings. If it is a My Site, click My Content, and then click Site Actions and select Site Settings
  2. On the Site Settings page, under "Site Actions", click Site Collection Web Analytics Reports.
  3. From the left menu bar, under "Inventory", click Storage Usage to view the amount of storage space you're currently using.

Thank you so much Jason, so are you saying the only way to monitor the SharePoint security/auditing is to use the Admin Report Kit for SharePoint 2010?  Best, Ziba

Hi Ziba,

As I said before, besides Admin Report Kit for SharePoint 2010, you also can use audit.

Audit log can report to you the changes of user accounts and permissions.

You can refer the following article to check which events you can view by the audit log: http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/sharepoint-server-help/view-audit-log-reports-HA102039795.aspx

Thank you so much Jason for all great feedbacks!  My last question is, then we will need to add ACS server right? Does ACS needs to be a dedicated server?  Best, Ziba

Hi Ziba,

If you enable ACS on a Server to forward alerts you need to start a Service which is included in the SCOM Agent. Therefore I don't think it is possible to "enable" an agentless monitored Server.

ACS Forwarders

The service that runs on ACS forwarders is included in the Operations Manager agent. By default, this service is installed but not enabled when the Operations Manager agent is installed. You can enable this service for multiple agent computers at the same time using the Enable Audit Collection task. After you enable this service, all security events are sent to the ACS collector in addition to the local Security log.

You might want to Read http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212908.aspx

There are also some articles about Audit Collection Services you can refer to.
