How to have the URL Description selectable in a Content Query Web Part?

Hello,

The problem is that the Notes field is displayed and not the URL description from the list of links. The Content Query Webpart has these fields and values:

Fields to display:
Link:  URL [Custom Columns];
Title:  Notes;

In my list of links, I have these fields:

URL   ->   Like http://msn.com
URL description   ->   Not able to select this field in the content query web part to display.
Notes  ->  What is displayed in the content query web part as the name of the link.  Not what I want.

Notes is used and displayed as the URLs title or description, but I need the URL description. I have tried other field names but the CQWP cant find the URL description. How can I change the CQWP so the URL Description can be used?  What do I need to do the content query mail.xsl file or the content query.webpart file to make the webpart use URL Description instead of the Notes field for the URL?

Thank you,

Hi Paul,

As your description, you want to make the URL Description selectable in a Content Query Web part.

You can make a copy of ItemStyles.xsl in /Style Library/XSL Style Sheets, and modify the content of the copy. After that, export your Content Query Web part, and the ItemXslLink property to the newly created style sheet. Then upload the web part and use it in your page.

Do you have to use a Content Query Web Part?

You probably already know how to do this, but worth mentioning - If the links list is located on the same site as where you are trying to display the links you can just add the List Web Part and set the List View to Summary View, then go back in to edit the current view and filter the list to display only the links you are after. If you can do this then much easier (and less messy) than copying/modifying the ItemStyle.xsl.
