How to get build 10240 - is there any point?

I currently have build 10162 which seems to work fine but will not activate. Looking at comments on various forums, this seems to be a well known issue for which there appears to be no fix. As I understand it, since the current build is not activated, I cannot upgrade to build 10240 which leaves me stuck and unable to test further builds. Build 10162 seems to be more stable than the previous 10074 build and had been polished up a bit so I was keen to see what further developments have taken place.

I would like to know how I can get build 10240 other than from unapproved sources which I consider a risk? On the other hand since the full retail version comes out in 5 days, is there any point?

Beginning on 07-015-2015, those who do not have an activated Windows 10 Technical Preview build will be unable to install and active a newer build.  You will have to wait until 07-29-2015 for the released build.

Carey, thanks. So evidently I'm snookered as far as updates to the build are concerned.

I am happy to experiment with Win10 on a spare partition, but I think it a very risky strategy to do an in-situ upgrade of an existing good working operating system to one that is still immature and evidently rushed out of the door. The couple of builds that I have seen do not inspire confidence as to the stability of Win10 either.

What is Microsoft's strategy in the event that the upgrade fails spectacularly?

TenTimesTen,

The available way to get an activated Windows 10 build 10240 is to go back to your orignal Windows system (Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1), then upgrade from there.

If upgrade fails, Windows would rollback to your previous version of Windows.
