How to find out sharepoint databases have no front end web applications, in order to remove it from sql server?
We have a couple of sharepoint servers, and a couple of sql servers. The people who setup those sharepoint servers are no longer work here. I can see some of the databases for sharepoint has word test in it, so I think the site probably no longer exists, but the databases still left in sql server. Is there a way from SQL server end to find out for the sharepoint databases, what is their front end sharepoint server name, so that I can login to the central admin site to see if any site connected to the databases, then I can remove those databases that no longer have a front end sharepoint site, to keep the server clean. Thanks SQLFriend

Hi, Going to Central Administration > Operations > Data Configuration > Default Database Server in the central admin of the fnd server gives you the detail of which DB it uses. Central Administration > Application Management > Content Databases gives you which DB's are used by each web application. Using these details you can easily find out which DB's are unused. Or are you looking for something else? Thanks, Chanakya Microsoft Certified Professional My Blog

Thank you for the information, I know how can I find out this from front end - sharepoint central admininstration. But we have 3 sharepoint servers, 2 database servers, the person used to set this up created this database here and there. There are about 35 sharepoint databases there, but I didn't see there are as many as web applications. I want to make sure I'm not dropping the sharepoint databases are in use. And so what I ask is there a way from SQL server databases to find out what sharepoint servers are using the databases, and what are the web application URL, then I can go into the server and double check in central admin to make sure if the databases are in use or not. Thanks.SQLFriend

Hi, According to your description, in my opinion, I suggest that you should have a try to upgrade the data in the SharePoint database to determine whether to connect the front end web. Please have a try. Best Regards David Hu
