How to design report in SRSS to display nicely on the web and be exportable to pdf

Hi,

How do I design reports so they look good when viewed online?

Is there anyway for it to render nicely on a particular resolution or screen? Never done any web dev, so not sure if I am missing something.

At the moment I am just designing the report so it looks right on my box.

However by trying to maximise the space when viewed online, it means exporting to pdf ends up being a disaster.

Any ideas on strategies or guides to manage this?

Thanks

Regards

Jon

Hi Qiuyun,

If I design my report with the constraints of an A4 page, there is a ton of wasted space width wise particularly on today's widescreen monitors.

Is there anything that can be done to enhance the online display and still be able to export to pdf?

Hi Jon,

Based on my understanding, you create and deploy a report to report server, but you comes an issue when you export the report to PDF from report server, right?

In Reporting Services, the PDF renderer is a physical page renderer. For this renderer, it's important to keep in mind the concept of Usable Area. The Usable Area is the amount of space left on a page for your report to be drawn after reserving space for margins, headers and footers, and column spacing (for multi-column reports).

Horizontal usable area:
X = Page.Width - (Left Margin + Right Margin)

Vertical usable area:
Y = Page.Height - (Top Margin + Bottom Margin + Header Height + Footer Height)

Besides, since Print Layout is also a physical page renderer, we could preview the report in SSDT or BIDS in Print Layout mode to check if the report display well. If the report render fine in this mode then deploy it to report server, it should not come across an issue when exporting to PDF.

Hi Jon,

In PDF renderer, we should meet the layout posted above to avoid some issues. After deploying the report to report server, the report should be the same as the original one in report designer. There is no option to change the report width to fit the widescreen monitor width. If you want to display the report to fill the whole screen, you could specify the zoom property to a proper value.

If you have any question, please feel free to ask.
