How to create a Baseline against a Windows Performance rule
Hello, I’ve created a Windows Performance rule to gather data on a particular perfmon object. I then created a Performance View dashboard and scope it for my particular counter. I check marked some objects and I see the data on the chart – all good so far. Now to creating the “Baseline”. So, to the right under Actions | Baseline, I see Resume the Baseline, Pause the Baseline and Reset the Baseline – but these are all grayed out. Can someone help me in creating a baseline for a performance counter? I haven’t been able to find any documentation on this. Thanks, Tom Tom Martin Email: tmartin@caa.com

Baseline is a concept associated with the feature called "self tuning thresholds". The general recommendation is that these can be the noisiest type of counter if you combine them with alerting behaviors - so if you are going to, try and avoid alerting on a self tuning threshold monitor. The challenge with the baseline feature is that it takes a week to set up, and starts over automatically whenever the agent or monitoringhost that is running the rule are restarted. In high volume scenarios this can be frequent - so some feel that the self tuning threshold feature is not worth the aggravation. YMMV. DanMicrosoft Corporation
