How to check the client is healthy. Is there any MS suggested tool or freeware available.

If client is receiving policies and sending inventory on scheduled time, can say client is healthy. There are loads of free tools available to check the client health (if you search on internet) .Note that,Configmgr is not real time monitoring tool that tell you if client is healthy or not at the moment.

You can create reports based on the inventory schedule (many are available on internet) or have client status reporting tool installed https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc161956.aspx  which will help you to get client health status.

I would recommended to use Jason client startup script which does many health checks and fixes the issues automatically .
