How to change the sharepoint URL
Hi! I've recently installed WSS 3.0 on my Win2003 server that also runs Exchange 2003. The sharepoint site is running on its own Web Site on the IIS and has it's own IP address (10.20.30.41) so that it does not conflict with the Default Web Site that runs all of the exchange-related webservices on the IP address 10.20.30.40 Now, I need to change the setup of sharepoint / Web Site so that I can access the sharepoint site on its own Web Site. The Default Web Site is accessed e.g. at http://server2. This URL is also the URL that the sharepoint site is installed to/at but on its own Web Server which is different from server2. I have a DNS entry for the site that I want to call "sharepoint" that has the IP address 10.20.30.41. How do I change the sharepoint setup so that it works with the http://sharepoint URL? Changing the Host Header Value apparently does not work with the sharepoint setup. Help! I'm lost

Don't make any changes in IIS when using WSS 3.0! You can now make all those changes in Central Administration. For changing the host header (and more), check out Alternate Access Mappings. You will find this under the Operations tab and Global Configuration section. Click "Edit Public URLs" and be sure to have the correct web application selected before you make any changes. HTH,Kale

You can try to extend web application to another zone, for exampleintranet, and associate your url with that zone. it can be performed inside the central administration, in Application manegement by clicking on"Create or extend web application". Make sure you select appropriate web application in top-most dropdown.

I changed the physical server name itself and got in to lot of troubles. After a lot of hassles (reboots), I am able to get the server up and running moss but the CA still shows the old server name. But I am able to open the website using the new server name. I do not understand where is teh loop hole.

Under no circumstances you shouldn't change physical server name. You can change IP address, but if you change name of server, you must change everything: from database connection strings to service accounts under moss and sql server is running. This is not a recommended path. As I already said in previous post, you can extend web application (if this is testing machine or trial) or you can use alternate access mapping (I haven't tried this).
