How to avoid breaking SharePoint when moving to a new domain?
We have a sharepoint instance on ServerX, we're going to demote from the xxx.local domain and promote to the yyy.local domain. I need to figure out if that's going to break sharepoint (I know it will for the xxx\users but since we have domain trusts setup, can't we set an admin account on the yyy.local domain) This is what I think we need to do: 1) document all sharepoint permissions (i've already done this) 2) add yyy\administrator with full rights to sharepoint 3) demote server from domain controller 4) disjoin from the xxx.local domain 5) join to the yyy.local domain 6) promote server to domain controller 7) add users from the yyy.local domain with appropriate permissions to the sharepoint installation I think my logic is sound, but I'd feel better if I had a concrete procedure. I can find plenty of documentation on how to move it to a different server on a different domain, but we're not doing that.

You may have service accounts, IIS pools, farm accounts setup that will also need to move? If so, follow this docuument http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934838 cfor the proceudre to update these. Where is SQL running? It will need to grant permissions to the new farm, pool etc accounts. When you say "promote to domain controller" I hope you mean promoite ON the domain controller, or are you actually trying to run SharePoint on a domain controller? There are known issues with that configuration - here's a workaround - http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/1/a/b1a6dceb-92a3-4808-8dac-b4e40c90ce00/StandaloneDCWorkaround.msi Finally, you may want to run the configuration wizard to force reapplication of the local security policies on files, registry settings etc aafter you move the server and transfer the service accounts.
