How to Suppress Both New and Closed Alerts
Hi All, The scenario I am struggling with is as follows: SCOM Network Device Status Check monitor (SNMP GET based polling of devices) is used to monitor the availability of network devices. However, in order to minimize the potential for false alerts due to a transient errors I have configured an SMS enabled notification subscription to receive alerts from this monitor for devices belonging to our Network team with an alert suppression of 4 minutes. I have chosen 4 minutes as it is my understanding from examining the configuration of the Network Device Status check monitor that the polling interval is 2 minutes. So, if the first Device Status Check fails causing the state of the device to change the notification subscription should suppress the alert for 4 minutes and only if the state is still Critical should it then forward the New alert as it is assumed that the device is still not responding on the second check. What we are finding, however, is that whenever such transient failures occur SCOM suppresses the New alert but the Closed alert is still sent out as an SMS presumably because the status changes from good-to-bad-and-back-to-good all within the suppression period of the alert meaning the final state change to good is not suppressed. At least, that is what I suspect is happening. My question is how can I configure the Alert Suppression to NOT forward the Closed alert when it belongs to the same event/alert as was suppressed? Ideally, I would prefer not to extend the suppression period if possible since that means the potential exists for genuine device failures to go unnoticed for a more than acceptable amount of time. Any suggestions on how this is possible or on what may be the sweet-spot in terms of the amount of time to suppress the Network Device Status Check alerts would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you for your considered reply, Michael
