I ran into a similar problem with a large library that would not allow me to move it into a new environment via the methods you mention, and I was able to pull it off with the help of a free tool at CodePlex: http://spiefolder.codeplex.com/ SPIEFolder allows you to export the contents of a library or list to the filesystem of the SharePoint server you run it from (it has to be done on a SharePoint server, since it uses the SharePoint object model) and import it back into another location within SharePoint. Its very handy for situations like this. I used it on a library with about 500 MB of documents in it, and it worked like a charm.
