How long does Upgrade-SPSite takes to upgrade a site collection?

Hi,

I am testing upgrade of a site collection to SharePoint 2013. The size of the content database is 225 GB. It has only onne site collection.

This is a double hope upgrade. I have upgraded SP2007 sitecollection to SP2010 first.

On SP 2013 the Upgrade-SPSite is running now for 4 days and only 75% is completed.

The database is already cleaned up for document versions and audit log (clean up done in SP2007). The database is also shrinked (in SP 2007).

How to speed up the upgrade process.

Regards,

Trupti

4 days doesn't sound right, what hardware are you using to upgrade the site, is it still performing any work (are the CPU/RAM loaded and is the % increasing) or has it hung at some point?

Never shrink database files*. It will slow things down, it's the equivalent of zipping a file server up and then wondering why it's slow to access the files in the zip.

225GB is a large database, i'd be looking at splitting that up into seperate site collections. It is very hard to say how long an upgrade site will take, it varies heavily depending on the hardware, content and so on. Some decisions, such as that to shrink databases, will slow this down.

How long did the 2010 upgrade take? I'd use that as your starting point for estimating the time required. It might be significantly longer but if it's taking 10 times more then it implies something isn't right.

*There are times to do this but if you have to ask what they are then you shouldn't be doing a shrink.

Thanks Alex,

The 2010 upgrade took 12 hours. And yes, SP2013 is taking 10 times longer than that.

The upgrade is not hung. % is increasing, however it is very slow.

We have 49% unused space in the content database of SP2007.

Backing up and copying that large data takes very long. So we are shriking before upgrading.

I analyzed the site upgrade log file to find the elapsed time for various activities.

The process is trying to upgrade 5688 sub sites in the site collection.

For the initial sub sites, the elapsed time is ~20 to 30 seconds. However as the upgrade is progressing the elapsed time is increasing for each subsite to 2 to 3 minutes.

The biggest difference in execution time is for following steps

1. Provisioning the Design Gallery in site

Provisioning the Design Gallery in site: << URL of a subsite>>
[SPTree Value=SPSite Url=https://teststaff.nmit.vic.edu.au] added to dependency cache by lookup

End Upgrade()
Begin Commit()
End Commit()
Begin Dispose()
End Dispose()
