How does WSS 3.0 look at Active Directory when creating user security?
We are trying to save time to get everyone into WSS 3.0 as a Reader, then build groups as needed.
I know that Active Directory is accessed during the install. I can type a person's name, click on the check mark and the person is verified. What I would like to do is take out that step out. Is that possible?
We are trying to build a visual security model and knowing how Active Directory is used in WSS 3.0 would be helpful.

The easiest way is to add NT Authority/Authenticated Users as a SharePoint user with Read access. That way anyone who can authenticate to your AD will be able to login to SharePoint using the AD credentials with Read access.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP

I did this and although I know for a fact that there are in excess of 500 users, only 143 showed up when I showed people inside SP. Do they not show up until they log in the first time?

The individual users won't show up inside SharePoint on the people's list until they have contributed something (added something). As long as they are read only users they won't show up when you list people inside SP. They will be able to login.
This is by design.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP
