How does Operations Manager basicly works
Hi I have installed SCOM 2012, and been reading a bit in an SCOM 2007 book, but I can't get my head around, how Management packs and Managed computere is linked together. I add 5 computers, and I add a Management pack, as far as I can think, the the management pack automaticly tries to define what should be monitored on the 5 computers is this correct? Or lets try another way around, if I have 5 servers and want server1 to alarm when c drive less than 1GB, server2 with < 2GB and Server3 <3GB and so on. How do I set this, should this be done with overrides, and how is this easiest done? Hope someone can help :) Regards Lars Mortensen

Hi Lars There is no "basically" when it comes to scom. It is a big application with a steep learning curve. Some useful guides: http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2010/09/02/operations-manager-101-download.aspx (it still applies to SCOM 2012) http://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh769766.aspx "I add 5 computers, and I add a Management pack, as far as I can think, the the management pack automaticly tries to define what should be monitored on the 5 computers is this correct?" Sort of - the agent will download required management packs and a discovery process will take place. The agent will get the configuration automatically depending on what is discovered e.g. is SQL installed? What version of windows? Etc. Or lets try another way around, if I have 5 servers and want server1 to alarm when c drive less than 1GB, server2 with < 2GB and Server3 <3GB and so on. How do I set this, should this be done with overrides, and how is this easiest done? Yes, overrides are the way to go here: http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/category/overrides/ http://thoughtsonopsmgr.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/storing-overrides-good-bad-and-ugly.html Specifically for logical disk space -http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/operationsmanagerauthoring/thread/9151df3e-0be9-4985-9779-7802f2d6d53c Cheers Graham Regards Graham New System Center 2012 Blog! - http://www.systemcentersolutions.co.uk View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Hi, As per my understanding, I say you won't be able to monitor agents (which are your computer) in SCOM until you have management packs. You need to import MP's based on your requirement (if you want to monitor services for exchange, sql, AD, IIS.. and so on you need to import respective MP). These MP's have several workflows which runs on the agent. Based on what app, services thoses agents are running information is passed to MS and those information in the form of data is available in SCOM console. These MP's have got several rules, monitor, tasks which are enabled or disabled by default. For any custom requirement, YES, you need to override MP and as a best practice save it to custom MP (in your own MP created in the console only). For more info pls refer to below link: http://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh230741.aspx Hope this helps.. Thanks, Varun
