How do I get a field to auto-populate based on the entry of another field?

I have a requirement to create new fields...in one instance, I want to create a column for Customer name. This field would be managed metadata field to prevent user errors, and also cause there will be hundreds of them. In addition to that, I want the Customer number to auto-populate once the customer name is in place. Is there a way to do this in SharePoint? Or is there a better way to do this?
