How can I reuse the URL of an existing site for a newly designed replacement site?
I have an existing site http://site that is being rebuilt and updated using a new site called http://site2. Once this is completed I want to be able to rename http://site to http://old_site and then have http://site2 become http://site. Is this possible and how would I go about doing this? We want to be able to keep the old site around in case there are documents that were missed when we created the new site or for anything else that needs to get tranferred over. At some point when we feel we got everything, we'll delete the old site.

Are you referring to multiple web applications or truely seperate site collections? Eli Van Eenwyk Visit my blog @ http://www.inergex.com/blogs/sharepoint

Hi, There is no good way to change the site collection URLs. So you have to use the backup and restore to change the site collection URL. Please refer to this similar post: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointgeneral/thread/0d2abd2f-6208-4745-a389-1ada60cca287 Hope it is helpful!Seven

I'll look into that solution and let you know what we do. Never thought to do a backup restore with another name so I appreciate the reply.

Assuming that you are these site collections are at the root of the web application, you could simply just create the new web application and then detach and attach the content database(s) from one web application to the other. Otherwise, backup / restore would also work.Eli Van Eenwyk Visit my blog @ http://www.inergex.com/blogs/sharepoint

You can perform these steps by changing alternate access mapping to the old site and when you finish the new site change it's alternate access mapping to what you want
