How To connect to oracle 6i from visual studio 2013

hello ,i have visual studio 2013 ultimate installed on windows 8.1 pc

and another machine with windows server 2003 and oracle forms 6i database installed on it.

how can i connect from my development machine (that has VS2013) to the oracle database on the server to make an application for viewing and editing that data.

and if possible what parameters and configuration wanted to achieve that .

maybe my qestion is too long but is it possible to migrate from oracle 6i database to sql server 2012 too.

thanks in advance.

Its true your question is too long and not easy to answer in one post:

  • You need to decide what type of application are you going to build: web, win, wpf...
  • Is your dev machine and your server are on the same network?
  • If you asking about the connection from within the code, the connection from a .net app to Oracle DB is quite similar to the connection of SQL, here you can find info about OracleConnection object which is similar to SqlConnection
  • I haven't done before a migration from Oracle to SQL and I don't think this is the right forum for this question. You can post this question at SQL Server Migration forum.

Hi eng.shahoud,

Based on your description, I am afraid this is not a C# issue. And actually each thread corresponds only one issue.

>>how can i connect from my development machine (that has VS2013) to the oracle database on the server to make an application for viewing and editing that data.

This is a VS issue, you can redirect to VS General forum  https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=visualstudiogeneral

>>maybe my qestion is too long but is it possible to migrate from oracle 6i database to sql server 2012 too.

For migrate issue, as Fouad said, you should post in  SQL Server Migration forum.

In addition, this issue you can refer to Migrating Oracle Databases to SQL Server (OracleToSQL) MSDN documents.

Thanks for your understanding.

Best regards,

Kristin

You have a lot to learn.

http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/deepak.sharma00/connecting-to-oracle-database-from-windows-forms-application/

You need to be using Oracle Express that is installed on the same machine as VS and develop the solution against the Oracle Express version on the software devlopment machine. What it means is that you export the tables and data from the 6i database and bring it over to Express database on your development machine.

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/database-technologies/express-edition/downloads/index.html

You need to understand Seperation of concerns.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_concerns

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multitier_architecture

Here take this one and you can find a N-tier C# Windows forms solution usning Bing or Google, but n-tier architecture will be the same between C# or VB.

For Oracle type question, I suggest that you post to an Oracle forum.

Thanks , Fouad Roumieh

Type of application is : Web Asp.net Mvc5 project.

my dev machine and database server are on the same network

i am trying to use entity framework.

From server explorer ->data connections -> add new -> choosing Oracle Database(oracleclient) for the data source , so it is requesting for the server name and credentials.

and as i know for the oracle installation on the server, admin  provide me with service name and credentials .

You should connect with these credentials as given and it will save it for you in web.config. And if you have issues on this level go back to the admin.

Also you can post your questions on asp.net mvc forum, asking for samples or help on code issues.

There is a dummy sample here on how to connect to Oracle with entity framework.

VS has nothing to do with this. Do you not have someone in this place you work at that has written .NET applications using the Oracle DB? If you do have someone, then you need to go talk to them.

The answer could be simple. If you have ODBC can connect to Oracle 6i then use SSIS to map the fields from ORacle 6i to MS SQL. Don't spend time writing code.

@eng.shahoud,

As I talked before, this is not a C# issue. You posted in a wrong forum. Now i will move your thread to off-topic forum. If you have any issues related C#, please  feel free to post in this forum. Thanks for your understanding.

Have a nice day!
