How Do I Stop Nag Notes About Edge

I am using Win 10 Pro and Office 2010.  IE11 is set as the default browser with all its defaults selected.

Every time I click on a link in an email, a box pops up and asks how I want to open the file.  IE11 is highlighted.  Below it is shown "Featured in Win 10"  followed by Edge.  A box also appears that states: "Always Use This App"  I have checked the box at least 10 times, but the popup continues to appear.

Any suggestions about stopping the popup?

Hi Whisper2,

Have we tried to set the default program under settings? We may give that a try:

Under Settings->system->Default apps->Web Browser, change it to Internet Explorer

We may also check the other settings listed available.

You can change your default apps in Windows 10 by going to the Settings > System > Default Apps. You can set default web links here. If you go to "Set defaults by app you can navigate to Internet Explorer and click on Choose defaults for this program. Here youll find a list of all the protocols and extensions that the app has been coded to recognize. You can also edit the Edge app in set defaults by app and uncheck any web protocols you dont want associated with Edge. You can also reset to Microsofts recommended defaults from the Settings > System > Default apps area.

Hi Michael,

As I stated in my question, I already have set IE 11 as the default Browser.  I have checked by file type, protocol and by app.  IE 11 has all the boxes checked for applicable file types and states "This Program has all its defaults.  For Microsoft Edge, all but two boxes are unchecked.  The two check boxes are Microsoft Edge and Read files.  The system will not let me uncheck these, or they would be unchecked as well.  The settings page states: This Program has 2 of its 7 defaults.  These are the two that I can not uncheck.

When I click on a link in an email, the pop-up has IE 11 highlighted, so I can just click it to open the link.  But it asks me every single time if I want to use IE11 or want to select Edge or some other program.

I am comfortable with changing the Registry if that is what I need to do to get rid of this pop-up.

Just to state that I have exactly the same issue as Whisper2, as outlined in this thread:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-outlook/microsoft-outlook-link-in-email-using-windows-10/49d3cfa1-fb6c-4da3-8157-c0e8ee4184a4

As Whisper2 states, I too have already set IE11 as the default browser.  The only additional info I can provide (which I put on the other thread) is that making Edge the default program or making Firefox the default program works fine - in both cases, html links in Outlook open directly in the browser without the pop-up box.  The issue (as Whisper2 describes) only occurs for me when I make IE11 the default browser.

I, too, have this problem. In fact, from posts in various other forums, I believe MANY others have the same problem. It's really annoying! I hope someone looks at it and comes up with something other than "Set your default programs."

Yes, it looks like a problem for everyone who has Outlook 2007/2010 and is trying to get it open links in IE11. There are numerous threads that have started on the Microsoft website. There is also this thread:

www. tenforums.com/browsers-email/15973-can-not-declare-ie-11-default-program.html

in which people have tried many different things to fix it: reinstalling office, resetting IE, switching default programs in various ways, registry edits etc.  None of them have worked.  Looks to me that a Microsoft patch is the only thing that will resolve it.  This bug is causing people to install alternative browsers like Firefox as their default, which do work properly, so it's in Microsoft's interest to fix this as soon as possible.

Hi all,

For the default program, we may consider change it under Control Panel:

Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs

Then follow the steps mentioned in the article below:

Make Internet Explorer your default browser

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/make-ie-default-browser#ie=ie-11

Edit:

Further, go to the above article again, then choose the other option:

Choose default for this program

Then Select all.

Then it should fix the issue mentioned.

Michael

as has been described in this and other referenced threads, the steps in the article you have linked have all been tried, and do not help.  As you would imagine, they were the first steps that were tried.  Perhaps the trick is your step:

"Further, go to the abobe arthive again, then choose the other option"

Could you explain exactly what you mean?

Many thanks for editing your reply and clarifying that.  Yes, we have tried the steps you described above and that doesn't make any difference. Do you have any other suggestions?

It would useful to understand if Microsoft is currently working on a fix for this issue.

I created a work around until Microsoft fix this:

Install Chrome Browser (If not already installed) Make Chrome the default browser in the popup. Copy iexplore.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer to C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application Rename chrome.exe to something else. (Chrome still runs from the renamed file if required) Then rename the copied iexplore.exe to chrome.exe. The links from Email are now fooled into opening Internet Explorer instead of Chrome with no popup. This works even after a reboot.
