Help with decomissioning a Primary site and recreating the secondary sites on a different primary site
I originally posted this in the setup thread but not sure if that's the place for it. I am looking for a bit of advice as I need to decomission a server which has a Primary site and database installed on it. I have outlined a plan of action but not sure if my assumprions are correct. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have a Central Site, 5 Primary sites and 12 Secondary sites across several different countries. In NZ I have 2 Primary sites NZ1 on server SCCMNZ01 and NZ2 on server SCCMNZ02. The database server for both primary sites sits on SCCMNZ02. Primary site NZ1 has no secondary sites and is used as the MP for clients in Auckland. Primary site NZ2 has secondary sites for Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong attached. It has become necessary to decomission SCCMNZ02. I have decided not to recreate the site NZ2 and instead move my secondary sites onto NZ1. The issue I really have is that my DB for NZ1 and NZ2 is on SCCMNZ02. My plan is to : 1) Backup the site database for NZ1 and NZ2. 2) Restore the database to a SQL server called SQLNZ01 and then point NZ1 and NZ2 to this SQL server. Make sure that both sites and all secondary sites and clients continue to operate as expected. 3) Uninstall one of my secondary sites from NZ2 and install it on NZ1. Remove the boundary from NZ2 and set it up on NZ1. I know that I cannot "migrate" the secondary sites and I have to uninstall them on one primary and set new ones up on the other primary. My question here is, can I give the site the same name that it had before ? I have read that it is not a good idea and I presume that even if I gave it the same name as it had before, because I removed it from the Primary site and have now attached to a new Primary server, it will be treated as if it is a new site and any existing config will be lost and that even if it had the same site code as before it won't pick up all the DP packages previously assigned to it. Is this correct ? 4) Assign clients to the Primary site NZ1. Because clients are attached to the Primary site and not a secondary site, even if I were to name my Secondary site the same name as before, I presume that as I move my (install) secondary sites onto the new Primary site, I will have to assign the clients within the secondary site boundary to the new Primary site. Is this correct ? 5) Distribute packages to the new Secondary site and remove the previous Secondary site as a Distribution Point on all packages. 6) Uninstall the Primary Site NZ2 after all the Secondary sites have been set up on NZ1. Tidy up AD (remove NZ2 from the SCCM Managment container). I am relatively new to SCCM and haven't had to do this before so I am not sure if what I have said and what I plan to do is correct. Please let me know if I am missing anything or if my understanding of the process is not right. Thanks G
