Help on Installation of Reporting Services
Hi, I have two servers one running Enterprise SharePoint 2010 and the other running SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard. I'd like to install Reporting Services but its a bit confusing on where this gets done. I can update my SQL Server instance to add the Reporting Services Features but when I do that it doesn't open up the configuration to for SharePoint Integration. When I do the install on the SQL Server box and then go into SharePoint Central Administration it can't find the reporting services instance. Based on what I'm reading I'm thinking that I need an installed instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 on my SharePoint Server, then install reporting services there, and then link to data back in the SQL Server DB box. Can anyone easily explain what goes on the SharePoint Server and what goes on the SQL Server box. The documentation leads me to believe the Reporting Services DB should be on the SharePoint box. Thanks for your help Donald R. Landry

To have Reporting Services in SharePoint integrated mode, the Report Server should be part of the SharePoint farm. To do that, the Report Server should be installed on a computer that has an instance of a SharePoint product or technology. Hope this helps.

So does that require me to install a full version of SQL Server 2008 R2 on my SharePoint Server in order to install Reporting Services DB on that server? Would it be possble to load SharePoint Foundation to my SQL Server 2008 R2 Server create my Reporting Services Instance there but also point my Enterprise SharePoint server to that Reporting Services Intance? So the setup would be I have my DB Server XX871 with SQL 2008 R2 and SharePoint Foundation Then I have my Enterprise SharePoint 2010 server which also has Project Server 2010 on XX895 that I can point to the Reporting Services Instance in order to create a folder under my Project Server BI center to host both Reporting Services Reports? I want to have the flexibility to host Excel Services Reports, Performance Point Services KPI's and Dashboars as well are Reporting Services Reports Most folks are using Excel Services for Project Server but I wanted the flexiblity to create and deply reports using SSRS and Reportbuilder 3.0. So does that require me to install a full version of SQL Server 2008 R2 on my SharePoint Server in order to install Reporting Services DB on that server? Not exactly. You are only required to install Reporting Services on a machine that has an instance of a SharePoint technology. I want to have the flexibility to host Excel Services Reports, Performance Point Services KPI's and Dashboars as well are Reporting Services Reports. Also, please note that you don't need to have Reporting Services in SharePoint integrated mode to publish your reports t a SharePoint site. You can publish your reports to a SharePoint site without having Reporting Services in SharePoint integrated mode by using a reporting Services webpart. Hope that helps.
