Have an HP Laptop with 8.1 installed, trying to install the 8.1 update package...

Will I still receive notification for windows 10 upgrade?

Why I ask is that I am not able to install 8.1 update package.

This has been a very frustrating experience.

I made a recovery usb drive for my laptop and decided to erase the drive and reinstall factory os with the usb recovery drive.

After logging in to the os, I looked at windows update and saw that there had been about 10 updates for my os that had already installed.

One of them is part of the 8.1 update package. Then I manually downloaded the 8.1 update package but had trouble getting any of the individual updates to install. All would not install and instead I was presented with a message that the packages were already installed.

After this, I looked again at windows update to see what updates had been installed.  Only one of the updates for the 8.1 update package appeared, while 5 or 6 other packages did not show at all.

I have searched the net for other people with similar problems and notice that I am not the only one.

This laptop was bought new from a big box store about 3 months ago...Hopefully it will be eligible for the windows 10 upgrade.

Any help in figuring out this issue would be greatly appreciated.

presented with a message that the packages were already installed..

Check for the possibility that the message is not distinguishing between Installed and Applied.

The state of your IE modules would be as good a place as any to start.  Then you could use its Help About Version link to find out what module versions should be Applied.  Use msinfo32.exe for its Loaded Modules report, sorted by Version to compare what you actually have in use.  Frequently users find that although they are ostensibly up-to-date in terms of updates being Installed checking this way shows that they are often woefully behind in having them being applied.

In your case a possible culprit would be the security package the manufacturer pre-installed and then you subsequently tried to uninstall.  Frequently the uninstall procedure does not work completely so then the user is left with some active but out-of-date security modules doing their interfering sight unseen.  In that case there is usually a separate clean-up program you may need to find and use.  Then I suppose you can try creating some consistency in your Installed versus Applied reports and hopefully be more successful doing that.

Good luck

Thank you for the reply Robert.

I noticed that my model # G6R31UA#ABA has not been tested with windows 8.1 by HP.  They have a website that shows if an HP computer is tested to run with windows 8.1.... its kind of sad.  This laptop is not even a year old.

On the other hand my dad bought a Dell laptop over a year ago from the same store and he has automatically applied updates...and he has the window icon notification to reserve windows 10 upgrade....

I just hope my laptop will be supported in windows 10.  Its a quad core with decent graphics and 6 gb of ram...

Your machine came with windows 8.1 after looking at HPs website.  What updates are you having issues installing specifically?

If you want help please respond with the details that I suggested you could check.

this is the link where I pasted my model # into...

Where is the "Help About Version link?"

Also, I have not tried to uninstall any security packages.....I just re-installed the whole os and then downloaded specific updates manually and tried to install them in that manner.

What is this separate cleanup program you imply of?

The updates I am trying to install correctly on my laptop are:

kb2919355

kb2932046

kb2934018

kb2937592

kb2938439

kb2959977

The KB3035583 update is supposed to make a notification appear on the right side of the task bar for windows 10 upgrade.

I guess there might be a chance that these packages are already installed...... but from what I've read....you will see a notification for windows 10. I have yet to see one in the task bar.

Hi plp384,

What is the verison of this Windows 8.1? Is it a RT version?

To verify whether ths KB has been installed, we can run "wusa /uninstall /KB:number" to have a check.
To install KB3035583, the KB2919355  should be installed. In addition, KB 3035583 is applied to Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1.
Here is a link for reference:
Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583

Windows 8.1 RT version is not included in the reserving presently.
Here is a link for reference(Pay attention to the last part):
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/features

We can get the Windows 10 for free only if we have got a genuine  Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 version.

That looks fine.  So it looks like you have current maintenance for IE on a 64-bit machine (so not WinRT to answer that question. <w>)

Another quick check would be to use the MUF Windows History to see what you have in your first line there.  E.g. pressing Win-w and typing  w his  Enter may be enough to get into that.  If you see a line there that refers to KB3000850 that means you are past KB2919355.  E.g. since the latter is often referred to as W8.1.1 I like to refer to the former as W8.1.2.  In previous terminology essentially that would mean you have the second "service pack" for W8.1 installed.  Unfortunately I don't know what you would see there otherwise.  They certainly don't help us identify this important detail except for that method.  I can think of a number of other ways that it would be helpful to see it in other information type UI elements.  It would also be nice if the Windows History could be queried easily.

Please try this. Clear all the updates performed before and reinstall the one you need.

Whenever Windows updates website scans and install any updates or patches, it gets stored on the below location.
%windir%\softwaredistribution\download

Depending upon the updates different folders gets created on the above location.

For clearing the contents of the softwaredistribution folder, try the below commands on the command prompt.

net stop wuauserv
rmdir %windir%\softwaredistribution  /s /q
net start wuauserv
exit

Try a direct windows update from windows control panel. Hope this helps.
