Hardware/VM configuration

Hi All,

I am just about to setup a new primary site Server. I was going to configure the drives as below. The hardware is limited on disks, I would prefer RAID 10 but that's 4 disks per drive. Is it better to have SQL,TEMPDB, SQLLogs on one RAID 10 array or separate them on RAID 1 disks?

I have no access to a SAN so it has to be on local disks. would it be better to install Hyper-v on the server and then install SCCM server as a VM on this server? I can the assign each drive VMDK disk to a specific set of disks.

cheers

How many clients will there be in total? How many disks can be added to the server?
(It does not make sense to use a VM as the vhdx files will end up on physical disks anyway)

Hi Torsten,

The reason I was looking at a VM on the server so it can easily be moved at a later date. athough it will be going on new hardware. was looking at the following drives, preferably in RAID 10 but that would be to many drives. Supporting about 3000 clients

C: OS                     (100GB)

D: Program         (100GB)

E: Content           (250GB)

F: SQL DB             (100GB)

G: Logs                 (50GB)

H: TempDB         (50GB)

Raid 1 for all drives with one Online spare would be 13 disks.

DP role I will put on a different local server to the Primary site server.

For 3000 computers, I would personal not chop up the drives like this.

Instead I would use a C: and D: only , C for the OS only, D for everything else.  Keep in mind that 250GB is almost nothing for content.

I agree with Garth, keep it simple.  Logical drive C: for the OS, and a second logical drive for everything else.

What about

c: OS     (RAID1)

D: SCCM/Content (RAID10)

E:SQL,TMPDB,Logs (RAID10)

all SQL volumes should have NTFS allocation size 64KB so I could do this on drive E:\

does the SCCM install volume need RAID 10 or just the SQL DB?

I would go with RAID 5 for everything, you will need more disk space as IMO this server has too little HD space.

Sure you can use the 64k blocks for SQL but you will likely not see a difference with 4k block either.

HDD

C: OS 100GB

D:SCCM 500GB

E: SQL 500GB

is it best to put the DP on a separate Server on the site where Primary is?
