I found that the hal.inf file is missing inside the windows-system32-inf folder. is there any way to regenerate the file?

The Hyper-V VM Console (by default) only gives you 16 colors.

To get more you need to use "Enhanced Session Mode" or an RDP connection.

Not sure what happened between the VM 'crashing' and now.  There could always have been something that transpired here that contributed to a change in perception.

Also, consider making sure that the Integration Services inside of the VM are up to date.

Hi Henry,

I noticed another thread you posted :

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b5bd1111-8f8d-4b6f-ac42-0ecf9ff0b3e7/accessing-the-hyper-v-vm-from-the-hyper-v-manager-has-only-16-colors?forum=winserverhyperv

I tested it in my lab , when I configure RDP to " high color 15 bit" it seems that the result is same as yours .

As Brian mentioned , when you use hyper-v manager to connect 2008R2 server the "16bit" .

To repair system file I would suggest you to use command :

sfc /scannow
