Grant or configure shared services between farms problem (An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Object reference not set to an instance of an object)
Specifications of farms:FARM 1x32 bit farm- 2 FEW's, 1 Indexer/Query, 1 SQL 2005 ServerSharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise Edition (12.0.0.6335)Windows Server 2003 R2 (all updates)SQL 2005 Backend (SP3)FARM 2x64 bit farm (new)- 2 FEW's, 1 SQL 2008 ServerSharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise Edition (12.0.0.6520)Windows Server 2008 R2 (all updates)SQL 2008 Backend (november CU)ok. I have a problem. I have two farms: FARM 1 and FARM 2. While migrating various web applications to the new farm, we had the FARM 1 provide shared services to FARM 2 so user's wouldn't notice the migration. This was in place for a few weeks.Since then, we have restored the SSP to the new farm using avepoint. I then moved all the web applications over to the restored SSP. Also, I stopped granting shared services on FARM 1. I then went to FARM 2 and stopped it from consuming services from the parent farm. Everything seemed fine until i started looking at problem in more detail. The alternate site mapping still show the old web applications from the previous SSP. Also, when I click on "Grant or configure shared services between farms", I receive this error "An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. "I can't seem to figure out how to fix the problem. I search every blog and support page i can find to no avail. Please help!On FARM 1, i can get the to the page manageinterfarmservices.aspx and have tried to re-enable "This farm will provide shared services to other farms" but it does not seem to help FARM 2. Is there something I can do to force FARM 2 from thinking its consuming services? I am not understanding why it never removed the references to the FARM 1. Furthermore, on the FARM 2, I can see the timer jobs that are created when consuming services from other farms and they are still running! In addition, I see this in the logs (from FARM 2):02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services General 6t8b Verbose Looking up context site http://sp3:8888/_admin/manageinterfarmservices.aspx in the farm SharePointProd_ConfigDB 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services General 6t8d Verbose Looking up the additional information about the typical site http://sp3:8888/_admin/manageinterfarmservices.aspx. 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services General 6t8f Verbose Site lookup is replacing http://sp3:8888/_admin/manageinterfarmservices.aspx with the alternate access url http://sp3:8888. 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services General 6t8g Verbose Looking up typical site http://sp3:8888/_admin/manageinterfarmservices.aspx in web application SPAdministrationWebApplication Parent=SPWebService Name=WSS_Administration. 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services General 6t8h Verbose Found typical site / (103ab062-9d23-4118-8f5e-d068a0c8636b) in web application SPAdministrationWebApplication Parent=SPWebService Name=WSS_Administration. 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services Database 880l Verbose ConnectionString: 'Data Source=SQLSPCluster.sscg.local;Initial Catalog=SharePointProd_CentralAdminContent;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Connect Timeout=15' ConnectionState: Closed ConnectionTimeout: 15 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 1624 8acb Verbose Reverting to process identity 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 1624 8acc Verbose Current user before SqlConnection.Open: Name: SSCG\dbaccess SID: S-1-5-21-1115635180-3023184720-316773507-23318 ImpersonationLevel: None 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 1624 8acf Verbose Current user after SqlConnection.Open: Name: SSCG\dbaccess SID: S-1-5-21-1115635180-3023184720-316773507-23318 ImpersonationLevel: None 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services Database 880m Verbose SqlCommand: 'proc_GetWebFeatureList' CommandType: StoredProcedure CommandTimeout: 0 Parameter: '@RETURN_VALUE' Type: Int Size: 0 Direction: ReturnValue Value: '' Parameter: '@SiteId' Type: UniqueIdentifier Size: 0 Direction: Input Value: '103ab062-9d23-4118-8f5e-d068a0c8636b' Parameter: '@WebId' Type: UniqueIdentifier Size: 0 Direction: Input Value: '1ff52183-4719-4b57-91db-79ddcba956ba' 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services Database 880l Verbose ConnectionString: 'Data Source=SQLSPCluster.sscg.local;Initial Catalog=SharePointProd_CentralAdminContent;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Connect Timeout=15' ConnectionState: Closed ConnectionTimeout: 15 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 1624 8acb Verbose Reverting to process identity 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 1624 8acc Verbose Current user before SqlConnection.Open: Name: SSCG\dbaccess SID: S-1-5-21-1115635180-3023184720-316773507-23318 ImpersonationLevel: None 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 1624 8acf Verbose Current user after SqlConnection.Open: Name: SSCG\dbaccess SID: S-1-5-21-1115635180-3023184720-316773507-23318 ImpersonationLevel: None 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Windows SharePoint Services Database 880m Verbose SqlCommand: 'proc_GetWebFeatureList' CommandType: StoredProcedure CommandTimeout: 0 Parameter: '@RETURN_VALUE' Type: Int Size: 0 Direction: ReturnValue Value: '' Parameter: '@SiteId' Type: UniqueIdentifier Size: 0 Direction: Input Value: '103ab062-9d23-4118-8f5e-d068a0c8636b' Parameter: '@WebId' Type: UniqueIdentifier Size: 0 Direction: Input Value: '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000' 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 ULS Logging Unified Logging Service 872l Medium Not reporting to Watson because the appropriate timespan hasn't passed 02/13/2010 23:50:07.04 w3wp.exe (0x2E80) 0x0C78 Office Server Office Server General 837w Exception Unhandled page level exception. All, This was eventually solved by a MS Enginneer (level 3 or 4) who has to modify tables in the config database. They didn't know the cause.

Just a warning note before I lock this thread as answered. Re: "This was eventually solved by a MS Enginneer (level 3 or 4) who has to modify tables in the config database." Don't do this yourself. Presumably MS Engineers are allowed to do this, but if you go in and amend your SP databases (config or content) yourself you can say goodbye to any MS support in the future.
