Getting started with SharePoint SCOM monitoring: 5-10 most common templates used?

We've been having some problems with our SharePoint environment going down lately. Suspicion is an issue with the SQL server (CPU and memory maxed out, as yet unknown whether it's a customization to SharePoint or a problem with the SQL box), but we want to use SCOM to identify issues before our users do and send alerts.

Of course, we don't want to miss useful alerts in a sea of inconsequential ones.

I don't know much about SCOM, my understanding is that there is a set of templates. Is there a short, short list of essential, easily configured alert templates, geared towards communication with SQL, that are recommended? Is there a way to ping the sites or a file within the sites that will alert us if something is unavailable for over x seconds?

If we see that we're still getting errors without notification, naturally we can adjust later.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to know about SCOM.

How to configure SCOM for SharePoint 2010:

Operations Manager includes a SharePoint Web Part that displays selected dashboards from the web console. A configured Web Part allows you to see at a glance the availability and performance metrics for applications in your environment.

How to view SCOM Dashboards in SharePoint 2010:

As I am not familiar with SCOM, I suggest you create a new thread on SCOM forum. The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks Dean. Anyone here have SharePoint SCOM experience who can recommend a pared-down set of alerts? If not I'll take it to the SCOM forum.
