General Question for SCOM admins
Hello, We are interviewing for an extra SCOM admin. What would be (in your experience) relevant questions to ask relating to SCOM, as a simple screening measure? Thx very much, JB

From my exp I would like to know first what is the current role that guy plays on scom... will let him speak and based on that would dig more information. lets say if he/she says involved in planning, agent deployment etc.. then will probe more based on my knowledge like what are the various ways agent can be deployed, ports, channel.. basic troubleshooting, That's how I would start off and later on can come to basic question. Thanks, Varun

Hi John There are a lot of the basic questions which have already been covered. The type of "what is x". "what is the difference between y and z". I tend to like the more open ended questions which give the interviewee a chance to show their understanding and experience. E.g. 1) Which management pack have you found the most noisy? How have you gone about tuning it? 2) What are the Pros and Cons of a gateway server in SCOM 2007 R2? E.g. cost a management server license. Can slow down maintenance mode. Does consolidate some data. Eassier admin of untrusted domains. No administrative help with workgroup computers 3) What are some high availability options for SCOM 2007 R2 core components. If they say they have SCOM 2012 experience then ask about High Availability for SCOM 2012 - agents = same as 2007. Network devices = resource pools. Console connections = NLB 4) If they say they are advanced users then perhaps ask, why can't you target a rule or monitor at a group? Ask them to explain what a class is? An object? 5) What type of issues have you come across when deploying agents and how did you resolve them? And while it is belting down with rain non-stop here in Blighty, I could be tempted down under, even if you contiue to beat us at rugby ;-) Good luck Graham Regards Graham New System Center 2012 Blog! - http://www.systemcentersolutions.co.uk View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

What will happen if I'll target a rule to a group and why? =) Answer to this questions can give you a good picture on how a candidate understands a product. http://OpsMgr.ru/
