General Administration Help
Hello all, I have recently been appointed to administrator of our Share Point. I have never heard of Share Point before but am familiar with IT and some Web Design. I am a admin on the server that is running Share Point on but am not a "Domain Admin" in active directory. We have some sites that have been created by our former IT guy and I need to gain access to these sites to update our customer information. How can I gain access to the site so that I may edit its contents? I have access to "SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration" but cant see any sites from here. I know its frustrating talking to a noob on topics like this but I REALLY need some help, Thanks.

Hi,As you told, you can access Central Administration, so you can display all web applications created on your servers, by going through Central Administration -> application management -> Select web application List, by this way you can see all your web application and thier URL , select any url you want and navigate though it.also, you can display site collection of your web application by Central Administration -> application management -> select Site collection List , by this way you can see all site collections of all web applications and thier URL , select any url you want and navigate though it.Best Regrads, Ahmed Madany

Hi there, First thing is to ensure you have local admin rights on the sharepoint boxes To gain access to the sites you simply make yourself an owner of the site by doing this: 1: From Central Administration, go to Application Management, Site Collection Administrators (SharePoint site Management), choose the site and enter yourself as the admin and/or 2: CMD, run stsadm -o siteowner -url http://yoursharepointsite -ownerloging domain\youradaccount Hope this helps By the way, IT and Web Design are some way from the land of SharePoint - suggest you get yourself up to speed with SharePoint Administration because its a lot more involved and further away from web design than you might think. A Good starting point is here ; that said there is an absolute mass of information and the best thing is always come back and ask! Good luck Cheers Geoff Cheers Geoff

I am finding it to be a larger than expected undertaking, but unfortunatley I cant back out haha. Thank you so much for the help I will be stopping by Barnes and Noble on the way home to pick up a book or two. I followed your instruction "From Central Administration, go to Application Management, Site Collection Administrators (SharePoint site Management), choose the site and enter yourself as the admin" but there are no sites under the "Site Collection" drop down box only 1 site collection (http://sps01:25925/sites/sops) when I select the drop down box my only option is Change Site Collection.. Thank you so much for your help. (This is installed and spans across 2 of our servers, does it matter which machine I log onto and run "SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration"?)

Hi, If your installation 'spans' across more than one server then that means that both make up your sharepoint topology. First off, make sure that you are a member of the Farm Administrators group - by default builtin\administrators group is a member so if you are a member of local admins on the server then you'll be ok - Central Admin --> Operations --> Update Farm Administrators Group Second, try setting yourself as the Site Administrator for that particular site collection. To do so, open Central Admin --> Application Management. Under SharePoint Site Management, select Site Collection administrators. Once on that page, select the site collection you are trying to access and make yourself either the primary or secondary owner Once you have done that you will be able to access the relevant sites. Cheers Geoff

Thank you so much for your input, I did as you requested and I still cant seam to log onto the sites directly I hope I am using the correct terminology as to not confuse anyone Sites = collection of sites created by a farm admin and Pages = web pages under a site. Questions Is there a place in Sharepoint I can go and reset my user password? We host our customers info and have some sites setup for them to access, I can access the pages using the link we sent them and there user name and password but when I try to log on as myself I get( The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and password are correct, and then try again Is there a place to go were I can see a simple lists of the sites and pages we have available? Below is a little info about our topology I have access to sps01 & sps02 I am setup as farm admin I am setup on sps01 as a local admin. I am NOT setup as admin on sps02 but do have access Farm Topology Server Services Running 192.168.0.22 Not Configured 192.168.0.30 Not Configured 192.168.0.8 Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mail 192.168.0.9 Not Configured lkfile01 Windows SharePoint Services Database Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail Windows SharePoint Services Web Application mail.ourcompany.com Not Configured SPS01 Central Administration Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail Windows SharePoint Services Web Application SPS02 Document Conversions Load Balancer Service Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail Windows SharePoint Services Search Windows SharePoint Services Web Application SPS03 Excel Calculation Services Office SharePoint Server Search Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail Windows SharePoint Services Web Application

Hi, To answer the questions directly as we are getting off topic! Is there a place in Sharepoint I can go and reset my user password? We host our customers info and have some sites setup for them to access, I can access the pages using the link we sent them and there user name and password but when I try to log on as myself I get( The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and password are correct, and then try again There is no place in SharePoint where you can reset your password (out of the box) - SharePoint is a collaborative environment meaning it is connected to various platforms that allow people to access it - e.g. Active Directory accounts are used to access SharePoint - meaning Active Directory is where you reset user passwords - not SharePoint. If you are being challenged to enter your username and password when attempting to access SharePoint, it can either be that the password is wrong, the account is locked or that there is a configuration issue with SharePoint (for example, you need to know whether SharePoint is giving you access denied or if IIS is...) Is there a place to go were I can see a simple lists of the sites and pages we have available? From the Central Administration no, from the Site Collection yes. Meaning you have to access one of your sites and then via View All Site Content or Manage Content and Structure you will be able to see what repositories are available. However, from Central Administration you will only be able to see the names of the site collections, their respective sites and who owns them, not their content. Hope this answers? Cheers Geoff

Thank you , in the future will try to post questions in an appropriate thread so as to not get off topic. from Central Administration you will only be able to see the names of the site collections, their respective sites and who owns them, not their content. (So am I locked out of sites since I am not the owner or should my "farm admin rights" allow me access? Thanks, Will post in new thread next time.
