From beginner: BIDS tutorials that begin with creating a datawarehouse using SSIS?
I'm not sure why, but most of the tutorials on the web begin with a tutorial of SSAS with the instructor opening AdventureWorksDW2008. Unless all companies use AdventureWorksDW2008, there isn't a valid reason why they should start with that. With AdventureWorksDW2008 I'm learning how to create cubes with predefined dim or fact tables that I have no idea how they were created. So my question is: where can I find a BIDS tutorial that starts with a relational database, creating the datawarehouse using SSIS, and then creating the cubes using SSAS? Then finally reports using those cubes and the datawarehouse. Thanks.

Hi, Please do not open multiple threads as it leads to fragmentation. I've answered your question here - http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlanalysisservices/thread/3c20fbaa-2af4-4765-9f76-95d240a0774e/#c2c3adfb-34de-4f37-a44d-d4aa917b46f7 and here http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlanalysisservices/thread/d0474c1d-0181-4aad-b85a-f36bc550b748/#34a0c574-d9e5-4ae6-aaeb-eebd29c2a5db You'll need to buy the Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit from Kimball Group which uses the Adventure Works Database for ETL, SSAS and Reporting as well. http://www.kimballgroup.com/html/booksMDWT.html Hope this helps!Shahfaisal Muhammed http://shahfaisalmuhammed.blogspot.com

The problem is that you're not answering the question. From what I've read about BI, creating cubes deals with the field names in the dim and fact tables that are used. All the books and the tutorials that I've seen begin with SSAS and how to create cubes with this fictitious DW database. Besides having to buy another book, are there tutorials in the web that explain all of this? Essentially, I want a tutorial that goes through the correct order of building a BI solution: 1) taking a relational database and creating the queries needed to create a the fact/dim tables of a DW 2) Open this DW and creating a cube from the tables that I created 3) Generate reports that display info from the cube and the DW that I created.

I don't believe there are online tutorials out there for what you are looking for. As I said, you'll need to buy the book Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit from Kimball Group and believe me, it is worth investing.Shahfaisal Muhammed http://shahfaisalmuhammed.blogspot.com

Unfortunately I have not been able to find an organized set of tutorials either. However, I have to agree with Mr. Muhammed that investing in the Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit is a huge step in the right direction. Not only does it introduce one to Dimensional Modeling, but it also has a ton of examples using different industries on how to build a data warehouse solution. We also have videos here at Pragmatic Works that I'm sure can be of assistance. I have provided the links to a few. Hope this helps!
