For a sharepoint webapplication if we overwrite the machine key in web.config is there a way to recover it? can we regenerate it

I have a MOSS 2007 webapplication which is throwing strange exceptions,Before proceeding further i suspect that while doing web.config entries for my custom components i also overwrote the machine key tag on the web.config. Is this ar reasin for errors and can i regenerate/recover the machine key
