Flagging unused site collections?
I have several web applications which house hundreds of site collections. What is the best way to keep track of "unused" site collections? For example, I'd want to be able to pull a report of site collections which have not been used in the last
year. I have come across a few articles which talk about the "Site Use Confirmation and Deletion" feature in Central Admin, but after reading
http://mossguru.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!A5920BAF37F8D487!308.entry , it does not look like this actually looks at whether a site collection is actually being used.
I would appreciate it if anyone could provide me with any information/links which would help me get to this data. Thanks!

Hi,
You are right, the "Site Use Confirmation and Deletion" feature just give a hint to the site owner to confirm if the site is active.
For your need, there is no good solution to use since it will be a hard work to save a variable for a long time through customizing SharePoint
sites.
Hope it is helpful!

It isn't your job to keep track of active or deactive sites, unless you are listed as the site owner for all of them (poor you if you are!). A better scenario is to delegate authority to the site collection owners and use the automatic deletion feature
to ensure they confirm that the site remains as a required resource. If not, then automatic clean up should occur.
There are some good codeplex tools to help you here: This one will tell you when a site had its last content change, a value that should feed into your governence plan on how long a site can sit without updates and should be considered an archive and
dealt with accordingly:

and this one helps when a site as deleted and someone then screams about it.
