Fixing SCCM clients which are not appearing in the console or not reporting properly to the console
Does fixing these types of problems usually require investigating each client due to the various possible causes or are there ways to resolve these issues with a large number of clients at one time using one or two methods? I inherited an SCCM system with dozens and dozens of clients either not appearing in the console or not reporting properly. I'm not opposed to individual checking. I just want to make sure I'm not missing any possible shortcuts. I also understand there are third-party tools you can use with SCCM to retrieve information from clients (logs, etc.) to help troubleshoot issues. What tools do you recommend? Do these tools need the Remote Tools Client Agent enabled for the third-party tools to work? I don't think there is anything seriously wrong with this SCCM system. I think these malfunctioning clients have been around for awhile and no one has bothered to troubleshoot them until now. Thanks in advance for your help. Steve

Hi, Have a look at client center, it does not require Remote Tools Agent and you can troubleshoot a lot of things when accessing the client, repair WMI and do a lot of other cool stuff with it. I normally use it to troubleshoot clients that doesn't work. Wmi is often the root cause and needs to be repaired in these cases, where the SCCM client isn't able to install or are generating errors in the event-log like " cannot read client settings from WMI" e,t.c. you can also use wmidiag to troubleshoot wmi.. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7684 Regards, Jörgen -- My System Center blog ccmexec.com --

Yep, it is possible (although unlikely) that each and every client has a distinct issue. Cleaning up AD is the best first step using something like oldcmp from joeware.net. A client startup script is a good next choice. These scripts will make sure the client is installed and the service is running along with dependant services like BITS. There are a couple of community ones floating around. Finally, a robust solution like Adaptiva's Client Health will do a lot of extra checks and maintenance to diagnose and ensure client health in the long run.
