We have configured a federated search between FarmA and FarmB. Our moto is to pull the search results from FarmB to FarmA. Below are the steps followed

• Created trust between FarmA and FarmB
• In FarmA, created result source with Remote SharePoint and FarmB search URL as Remote Service URL.
• Gave read permissions to the user in both FarmA and FarmB

When user do a search in FarmA, he is getting 401 unauthorized error. But if user access the FarmB search URL and then do a search in FarmA, then user is able the get the results.

Note that user is encountered with 401 unauthorized error till his first visit to FarmB search URL. Once FarmB search URL is visited then after everything is working fine.

May I know the reason what could be the issue?

According to your description, my understanding is that the users encountered 401 unauthorized error till they accessed FarmB search URL.

Did you configure federated search between SharePoint online and SharePoint 2013?

Could you please provide error log?
