Farm admin but cant access sites
Hello all, I am a admin on our local servers (not Active Directory) I also set my self as a (Farm Admin) through (SharePoint 3.0 Central Admin) but when I try to access a site directly it wont let me in (The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and password are correct, and then try again.) I need to gain full access to these sites so we can update them, the original owner is no longer with the company HELP. Do I need diferent Active Directory permissions?

Hello, If you are the new administrator, I would create security policies for your web applications via Central Administration.Go to Central Administration > Application Management > Policy for Web Application and create policies for your web applications and give yourself full control. This will give you access to all your SharePoint sites. You should not have to make any changes in AD.Do you know the user names and passwords for the service accounts (search account, system account, etc...)Chris Caravajal MCTS SharePoint Help

Ok so apparently SharePoint group Does role exist by default? Can do this Cannot do this Farm Administrators Yes Perform administrative tasks in Central Administration Take ownership of any content site. Administer individual sites or site content unless they take ownership of the site. Being a farm admin doesn't allow me to edit site Unless I take ownership, How would I take ownership?

To take ownership of a site you can use the following command, would suggest you to take ownership as a secondary site administrator stsadm -o siteowner -url http://yoursiteurl -secondarylogin Domainname\userid For assigning the primary Administrator rights run the following stsadm -o siteowner -url http://yoursiteurl -ownerlogin Domainname\userid -Mukesh

Hi Langun, you are admin farm, so you can access Central administration, but this doesnot means that you can access any sites unless you have a permission on it. but you have a powerfull feature in which you can add your self as site collection admin from central administration, with the following steps:-1- go to Central administration.2- go to application management tab, site collection administrators, set your self as admin to any site collection you want.also , there are a very powerful way which i prefer it, which is add apolicy for your account to any web application you want , you can do that by:-1- go to Central administration.2- under application security section , select policy for web application , add a policy for your account. Thank you all for your input I have managed to take control of the site using someone else's log in credentials (whom I gave 2nd ownership to) My new question is why does my active directory user name & pass let me log onto windows (as it should) but when I try to use the same username & pass in SharePoint I get (The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and password are correct, and then try again) I am under the impression SharePoint uses Active Directory only, does the server need to be restarted or maybe does the Active Directory list need to be refreshed?

No, If your Colleague's AD account is working, I trust that you have Windows Integrated authentication enabled so even your account must work on it.Remove your account and READD it as DOAMIN\ACCOUNT on the site and check if it works. Ypu can also have your colleague having Admin access add you as site collection administrator from Site Actions->Site settings->Site collection administrators link. Thanks!I LOVE MS..... Thanks for the advice but I am setup under the "Site Collection Administrators" as the "Secondary Site Collection Administrator" then I go back to my desk and open up my web browser and navigate to the site. I input my log in credentials and I get this screen ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and password are correct, and then try again. User name: <input id="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_login_UserName" class="ms-long" style="width: 386px; font-size: 8pt; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" name="ctl00$PlaceHolderMain$login$UserName" type="text" value="lgunter" /> Password: <input id="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_login_password" class="ms-long" style="width: 386px; font-size: 8pt; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" name="ctl00$PlaceHolderMain$login$password" type="password" /> <input id="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_login_login" name="ctl00$PlaceHolderMain$login$login" type="submit" value="Sign In" /> <input id="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_login_RememberMe" name="ctl00$PlaceHolderMain$login$RememberMe" type="checkbox" /><label for="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_login_RememberMe">Sign me in automatically</label> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I can put in the customers User name and log in and it lets them in no problem, (but no to administrate of course because they aren't setup for it.) What could be the reason my user name is not allowed in this site?

Actually my AD username and pass wont allow me to any sites, is there some were I must go to add myself to the site as a user besides "Site Collection Administrators" I can log in with the customers username and pass and when I go under Site Collection Administrators and make the customers log in info secondary admin I can then log in as customer and edit site. but when finished I have to go back and remove them from Site Collection Administrators so they can edit there site. I want to be able to log in using my credentials and edit the site, I am currently secondary admin under Site Collection Administrators.
