I am experiencing some difficulty when trying to complete a system capture of a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF workstation. I have been trying several different things, and have still be unsuccessful, and quite honestly, parts of the trouble shooting is causing me to really scratch my head as some things are just not making sense.
I am using the capture media saved to a USB flash storage drive to capture an image of the computer. We are currently trying to replicate our current imaging process before moving to the more flexible layer approach just to get the process moved to SCCM first.
The capture process starts normally with the system off the domain, logging in as the local administrator account, and inserting the capture media USB drive which was created in the SCCM console. Since autorun is turned off, I double click on "LaunchMedia.cmd" file to start the process. When I browse to the location to save the file image, the remote server opens up immediately and I am able to select the destination folder and name the WIM file. I enter the credentials in a "Domain\Account" and "Password" format in the provided fields. At this time, the process goes as expected. After Sysprep completes the system reboots into the WindowsPE environment and it does take several minutes for the Windows OS to load, followed buy a quick Network Settings, and finally it hangs on "Capture the reference machine" for about 2 minutes. At this point the Task Sequence error message appears with the following message: "Image Capture Wizard has failed with error code (0x80070035)."
After doing a little research on the Internet I found this meant that the network resource was not available. During another attempt, I used the Bug mode during the capture process and used F8 to enter a command line. When I tried to ping the sever name and the IP address of the server, I received the error message "PING: transit failed. General Failure." When I look at the smsts.log file, I can see where it failed to connect to the network resource. What also bothers me is all the way at the beginning, when I select the destination of the file, I found the following error in the log file: "Connection to "\\srv-Server\folder\folder" failed with credential conflict. Using existing connection."
This is where thing begin to make no sense to me at all:
1) I can use the exact same system I am having trouble with capturing an image, to pull an image down using the PXE boot, using the same boot image, from the SCCM system. It displays no problems and while the image is being pulled down, I can open the command prompt and successfully PING the SCCM server.
2) I can use a different model of desktop computer, using the same USB capture media and successfully capture the image of the computer. One thing different, is when I click the browse button to select the destination, I have to enter the network credentials to select the folder, but enter the exact same credentials in the credentials area of the capture process as I used to connect to the resource and I am using with the workstation I am having trouble with.
I'm really confused why the Dell Optiplex 9020 is able to pull down an image, but is unable to upload an image using the same boot image. I have even gone as far as to inject the specific network drivers into the boot image, but this did not resolve the issue, and also does not make sense as I can download an image with the "basic" boot image.
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Daniel Olson
